The City of Walker started out as the Township of Walker back on December 30, 1837, with the passing of a public act by the Michigan State legislation. Walker Township had quite a large geographical footprint back in the early days. The township started west of the Grand River and the City of Grand Rapids, north to include what is now Alpine and Sparta Townships.
